The Lost Metal.

The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson Mistborn 7

The last three books started off by telling us about Wax’s past. How he got to be who he is. This one gives us Wayne. Wayne was and is a storyteller. He can spin a yarn out of anything and everything, including Marasi becoming a cannibal to explain the blood on her clothes. However while Wax’s stories are about change and solving the mystery Wayne’s are about loss and death. He is a complex and wounded man who uses his abilities to cover up the pain he feels. The pain of his parents death. The pain of taking the father of a little girl so young. The pain of not being the hero.

When he changes his hats he is able to become the person he is pretending to be; a banker, a chemist, a beggar,  a god. He invented baseball, brought electricity to the continent and even thought of building a race track. He was the best part of this book. His journey to his death began at the start of the book and continued as he slowly depleted his metalminds and had to use the truth to survive. He causes mayhem, chaos, fires and explosions where-ever he goes but always remembers to save the cat. In fact his journey towards his death was sad but it was also the highlight of the book and caused the biggest explosion ever. We will miss him but will never be sad. (Especially with the odd dead frog turning up in Wax`s coat)

This book also brings back Kel and brings in other worlds. The previous one showed how big the world was. This one is showing how big Sanderson’s universe is. It is confusing though because there are lots of other magics to bring in and new characters to explore ( Codenames are Stupid). However if you ignore the mulligans and imagine they are just there to add flavor to the story they become just another quirk, one I’m sure Marasi will love to explore.

The fact that she decides to chart her own path is just as important. She grew from being a fan of Wax to being the most important character in her own story. If there was a part five to this series it would be her story.

While I`m sad to see it go I will keep my hopes alive for the next instalment.
